April
Regret.
If there was one word that could encapsulate the way April had been feeling for the past year it would be regret.
All the God and church in the world hadn’t been able to soothe her bruised soul. April was learning her emotional state had the ability to make or break her spiritual connection with God. While her religion was meant to govern every other area of her life, it was hard to commune with God when her heart was hurting. No matter how much she told herself He had the ability to heal it, April was struggling with putting it at His altar.
Standing, she wiped her face and looked around the sanctuary. She’d chosen to attend a weekend shut-in in hopes that spending seventy-two hours in the house of God would remind her that her body was where His Spirit needed to dwell, however, that hadn’t been the case.
Had God turned His back on her? Was that why she felt so disconnected from Him? Was He waiting for her to make things right with her children before He acknowledged her as His own?
April walked over to the bench where she’d sleep and grabbed her purse to go to the bathroom so she could freshen up. Savant and Dijon had been on her mind a lot since she arrived, as if the Holy Spirit was urging her to keep her mind on them. Admittedly, April hadn’t made that much of an effort to be in Savant’s life once he became an adult, and she’d tried to control Dijon when she became an adult. During that time, April was convinced she was doing the right thing.
Now… she understood that wasn’t the case.
Unfortunately… she was worried it would be too late to have a healthy relationship with either of them.
While Dijon was open to spending time with her, she didn’t trust April with the details of her life because she didn’t want April to exert her opinion. Savant, on the other hand, had cut her off completely.
After using the bathroom, April washed her face and decided she’d shower in the Pastor’s office bathroom closer to sunrise. There were a lot of people going in and out right now, and she’d want to be able to take her time. As she left the bathroom, April checked her phone for any missed calls and text messages. They were only allowed to use their phones between teaching and praying.
At the sight of several missed calls from Dijon, April’s heart dropped. Something was wrong—April knew it. Her finger trembled as she pressed the button to return Dijon’s call, then placed her phone on her ear. Dijon answered almost immediately with…
“Ma! Where are you?”
“I’m at the church shut-in. What’s going on?”
Dijon’s breath was hard and shaky into the receiver. “It’s Vant. He was shot.” At the sound of her daughter’s words, it felt like the wind had been knocked out of April. “I need you to meet us at Baptist East. It’s not looking good, Ma.”
April’s chest caved and the phone dropped from her hand. All day, she’d been working through the fact that she genuinely wanted her children back in her life fully, and now, April didn’t know if she’d be able to reconcile with her son.
